In 2008 Francesca Gavin published Hell Bound a book on new gothic art with some of my favourite artists; Banks Violette, Marnie Weber, Terence Koh and Dr Lakra. Gavin referred to the movement as “the art of fear” inspired by black metal, pornography, slasher films, 9/11 and the global financial crisis. I loved the book but realised that my darkness came from inside, not out. My work was “gothic” because I was terrified and dislocated. Faced with my doppelgänger and ultimately, my death.
